Extruded polystyrene foam, also known as XPS foam, is a type of insulation that is optimal for use on cold-temperature piping systems. It is known for its excellent thermal conductivity, water resistance, and condensation control.
XPS foam is a rigid thermoplastic foam manufactured by an extrusion process that forms a uniform, void-free, closed-cell structure. The materials and process create a product that exhibits high compressive strength, low friability, and resistance to water vapor and water absorption, which can occur from freeze-thaw cycling on piping systems in contexts such as refrigeration equipment and pharmaceutical plants.
XPS foam can be pre-molded for various pipe sizes and also comes in board form. It is the preferred insulation for low-temperature systems due to its ability to minimize heat gain and prevent surface condensation.
